In the 19th century, women’s knickers had a back door opening between the legs, no wonder CAN CAN dancing was so scandalous! Their dresses were huge and so heavy they couldn't reach up and under to pull down their panties. (Um, yes that means no wiping on the nether regions) And to boot, back then they didn't shower much. Luckily real briefs came with easier to hitch up clothing in the 20th century
